The southern continent of the Americas, South America extends over nearly three and a half percent of the world’s surface. In the Western and mostly Southern Hemispheres, with just a tiny portion in the Northern Hemisphere, the continent is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and east with North America and the Caribbean Sea to the northwest. Because of its triangular shape, South America has the shortest coastline of any continent; however it is home to the world’s tallest waterfall, largest river and longest mountain range.
